GCBC ERGATHON SUCCESS!!!

Report

On Monday 16th January GCBC  started its absolutely momentous task of erging (and cycling for coxes) 2012km in under 24 hours in order to buy new blades for the women and a men's scull.

The system was basic: split the day up into 48 half-hour slots.  Get 8 ergs and 1 bike.  Find GCBC members to occupy said ergs and bike for said slots and ask them to travel 6km each whilst on them.  It should be simple...

2012km Erg Challenge - Fundraising for new women's blades and a men's scull!

GCBC is rowing 2012km in 24 hours!

Starting at midday on Monday we'll be rowing through the night to raise money for a set of new womens blades and mens scull.

Any contribution would be very appreciated! Check out the live progress on the top of this site.

GCBC GOES TO HENLEY!!! (with CCCBC)

On Friday a coxed four from Girton went to the Henley Royal Regatta qualifying races in an attempt to qualify for the Prince Albert Challenge Cup.  The PA is one of two student events at the regatta, this one being for coxed fours and this year there were 35 entries for only 16 places. Some crews get allocated places by the Stewards based on performances throughout the year at large national races.  However, being a lately formed crew we were asked to qualify.

The day began, rather unconventionally, with a crew breakfast (thank you, Seb!) although I now think that every day should be started with copious amounts of porridge with fruit and honey.  We arrived relatively early in Henley so that we could go for a short paddle along the course.  The stretch of river is very different from the Cam, namely straight wide and busy (okay, so no change there - but far more motorised boats).  The paddle served as a chance to look around and get comfortable with the surroundings and the imposing wooden beams and piles along the course.  This was a great way to settle any nerves and we had one of our best rows to date. May Bumps 2011 Day Two, M1 report

Today we decided to go for a more conventional bumps race plan, i.e. go off hard, and keep going hard until something happens. Wednesday’s race left open the possibility of Maggie going for a bump back over the first 1000m, and Selwyn were confident they could bump back Downing II over the full distance so we knew we had to be on the ball to prevent both of those scenarios.

Some start practice on the row up helped us get a cleaner and more aggressive start than Wednesday,  we pushed to just inside station on Selwyn ahead and began to push away Maggie. Another spell of scrappy rowing through the gut meant we held level with Selwyn whilst still being able to push away from Maggie. Coming out of grassy we managed to settle back into a good rhythm and started to motor onto Selwyn, gaining a whistle just before the Plough. Entering Ditton Corner we got two whistles and a strong middle four push gave us three whistles very quickly. Our line was slightly outside that of Selwyn, but despite that our bumps push gave us overlap through the middle of the corner, with the bump coming on the exit of Ditton. Read more »

Boat Launch, 15th May 2011

Last Sunday saw the Official Boat Launch of our three new boats: Prometheans 1, Dr Alastair Reid and Dr John Marks II.  Fortunately the weather, which had been looking ominous throughout the morning held off for the entirity of the afternoon, meaning that a large group of supporters was able to gather at the Boat House to wish these new boats the best of luck with GCBC.  It was absolutely wonderful to see so many friends together at this event, showing once again the massive fan-base our club has rooting for it.  Huge, huge thanks must go the TIBC for supporting us and for providing the entertaining races later in the day.  But, more particularly, I would like to extend GCBC's gratitude to all the donors who made the purchase of these boats possible.  Special thanks must indeed go to Dr Reid and Dr Marks, whom it was an honour to have with us for the occasion.  Now all it falls on GCBC to do is to go out, practise and make these boats win as often as possible!
