After a painfully early start, M3 arrived for the very first race of the day of Pembroke Regatta, only to be left waiting 20 minutes for our first opponent (LMBC M5) to arrive. Conditions were extremely windy, but we got off to a great start and absolutely charged down the reach, leaving LMBC trailing in our wake and eventually winning by about 7 lengths. Read more »

Robinson Head - W1

On the morning of Robinson Head nobody was entirely sure if the race would be going ahead or not, due to the large amounts of ice! Not willing to interrupt our training we had a hard water session in the morning anyway, avoiding the part of the river frozen solid. At midday the race was announced on, but over a shortened course of about 1.5km. Having effectively raced the course 3 times in our morning session, and this being our first race of term, the girls were excited to see what time we could get. We had a very solid race, our rolling start sequence was suddenly changed on the start line with the decision not to have a stride, and it worked perfectly. The crew naturally settled finding their rhythm and really making the boat move with every stroke. We stayed strong and relaxed until the last few hundred metres, when calling for a wind for the finish had no effect as the girls were now feeling the work they'd put in that this morning in their legs. Still we finished strongly and we're extremely happy with the time we achieved knowing there's plenty more we can easily do to improve.

Cambridge Winter Head to Head 2012

M1 8+ (8th overall, 1st in race division, 3rd among Mays 2nd division crews)

Despite poor weather conditions in their grouping the M1 8+ have got off to great start this term!

GCBC ERGATHON SUCCESS!!!

On Monday 16th January GCBC  started its absolutely momentous task of erging (and cycling for coxes) 2012km in under 24 hours in order to buy new blades for the women and a men's scull.

The system was basic: split the day up into 48 half-hour slots.  Get 8 ergs and 1 bike.  Find GCBC members to occupy said ergs and bike for said slots and ask them to travel 6km each whilst on them.  It should be simple...

2011 Senior Fairbairns - Including Girton win!!! UPDATED (7/12/11 x2)

Just a quick update on the Fairbairn Cup races run by Jesus College on the 2nd December 2011. More details and full race reports will be added as the club recovers from term/racing/BCD....

 

M1 8+ (15:25.8, 22nd 8+, 14th Cambridge college)

After a couple of very good training sessions before Friday, M1 were confident as they came up to the start line that the potential to do well was still alive and well following our success in Winter Head.  We’d chosen to do a rolling start, so after two strokes to settle down the draws commenced, and although the boat felt a bit rocky, there was strength and enthusiasm behind it all.  The winds got everyone spinning their hands faster than ever before and we quickly reached rate and lengthened out.  Read more »

2011 Novice Fairbairns

In the early hours of Thursday 1st December, Girton’s first  novice men’s eight took to the mean currents of the River Cam. Under the motherly and diligent care of their cox, Pippy Wiseman, whose astute organisation and attention to detail ensured that the crew were the first to arrive for marshalling, the long wait began as the 50 or so remaining first novice men crews took up their positions before Jesus Boathouse. NM2 EMMA SPRINTS- Blues as boys beaten

A powerful start and a power ten to put M1 to shame proved just too little for the NM2 boys.

Despite high hopes and high quality training, Queens' suspiciously hench "NM2" pulled away as the last as Girton's oars betrayed the rowers.

Dressed to the nines in their angels and devils theme, featuring a dashing coxing appearance as the Devil, (complete with tail) the crew pulled together to strike fear into the hearts of their rivals. And despite confusion prior to setting off, being awarded a last minute bye, Girton made it to the start line in good time.

A good start saw them pull away from the Queens' boat powering down the Reach. Starting on the meadowside, the sun was in the cox's eyes, but the boys pulled together and continued to make excellent headway, pulling away half a length on Queens'. Ably assisted by their Bank party of Alum Hussain, Lorenzo Santinelli and Laura Highcock (also due credit for the costumes) the crew continued to squeeze the Green Monster away from the Queens crew. GCBC had four crews out on the river on Saturday 19th November for the Cambridge Winter Head. Through hordes of visiting crews, dense fog, cold, [insert hardship here]... they battled on. Individual race reports follow....

Emma Sprints 2011 - NM1

On the sunny and crisp afternoon of Sunday 20th November, 8 very beautiful girls and a dashing young man took to the river Cam in the Girton AD. Being the first to arrive for marshalling, Girton NM1 was fashionably on time and was soon called upon to take their race starts against their first opposition crew- Emma NM2. The race start was short but amazingly executed, with the power of ten bringing the boat to a flying start already giving them a slight advantage over Emma. They maintained this lead tearing away from the opposition all the way down the reach, crossing the finish line five boat lengths ahead, providing a spectacular race to watch for the bank party and marshalls, and an epic victory for Girton.

Queens' Ergs 2011

With Matriculation Dinner once again scuppering the chances of our Novice Crews dominating Queens' Ergs (or rather, let's just say that we decided to give everyone else a chance to win and held a fancy meal on the night instead), Girton decided, one drunk night down in the bar, that it would be a rather good idea to enter the Senior competition again. We would show the world what's what, keep our heads held high and show that, no matter what the challenge, Girton rises to it - Matriculation Dinner or no Matriculation Dinner!

 

Unfortunately, we came to this conclusion rather late and Murray Edwards had already nicked a few of our rowers.  No matter, Girton were now essentially entering two teams!  Even better.
